How Sicario Fools its Audience
Let's discuss some of the screenwriting elements in 'Sicario' (Denis Villeneuve, 2015). The storytelling is unconventional, especially the perspective in which the story is told - Who is the main character here? Who is in the right and who is in the wrong? What are your thoughts? Growing up is understanding that Kate's moral compass will kill eventually much more people, than "unhuman" slaughtering of baron's family by Alejandro. And if you dont understand why he needed to kill all his family, so you just doesnt want to live in real life, exactly like Kate

This is a great video, and I think your points are really interesting! Not at all saying you’re wrong, but I had a different interpretation and was wondering if anyone else had insight on it. Maybe I’m just stupid, or I’m used to consuming different genres/formats of media than Sicario, but is Kate really not the protagonist? Simply because she’s in a disempowered position for most of the movie and therefore isn’t the one causing the material events depicted in the plot (like the shootout) to happen? After all, the movie’s message is conveyed through her, the conflict between her and Matt/Alejandro is the emotional stakes most of the runtime is spent on, and she is the one who changes and develops as a result of what happens. The dramatic question in the movie isn’t “will Alejandro get revenge,” it’s “will Kate’s personal morality (solving the murder house, making sure things are done by the book, engaging in transparency) win out over the corruption and impotency of the task force? At least as I interpreted it. My reading of the movie was that she is a protagonist that values honesty, accountability, and compassion. Alejandro is an antagonist to her, in that he represents secrecy, extralegality, and violence. Some of the points in this video seem to frame the drug traffickers as the antagonists, but remember - though she’s uneasy during the border crossing, her reaction to the shootout isn’t “we need to take these guys out,” it’s “what the fuck are we doing here?” In that moment, the conflict is not between her and the gunmen, it’s between her and the taskforce. The whole movie focuses on this. Kate is initially idealistic and confident, and has an inciting incident in the first act (the murder house), which drives her to voluntarily dive deeper into this world (signing up for the task force). The reason she signed up at all is because she wants to get to the bottom of the incident in the house. But immediately, we can see her begin to have conflict with the antagonistic forces in the government - Matt and Alejandro both shut down her attempts to gather information. Then she spends much of the movie digging to uncover the truth of what’s really happening on her own, talking to her partner and making plans away from the taskforce. but she faces the obstacles of getting increasing antagonism from Matt and Alejandro. We also get stuff like the interrogation, which, while obviously terrible in its own right, is framed as “stuff Kate wouldn’t like is going on behind her back.” We already know that Alejandro isn’t a fed and is willing to do bad things for his revenge - the only thing that scene teaches us is that Kate’s concerns about illegal procedure from government officials ARE founded. She keeps getting closer and closer to the truth, until eventually the climax in the tunnel happens, and she finds out everything. The main “question” of the movie is answered - the operation is a complete waste of resources and Alejandro is acting on his own. The third act features the resolution - the bad guys get what they want at her expense, and Kate realizes she’s been exploited. Then, she tries (but fails) to wrest control of the situation away from the feds by threatening to go public with what she learned. She conveys the message of the movie - that the ends do not justify the means - and is the center of all the movie’s emotional beats except the dinner scene. She is also the only one who undergoes character growth, even if that growth is becoming sadder and more jaded. At the beginning, she was enthusiastic and hopeful, and now she’s timid and cynical. Matt and Alejandro, on the other hand, are completely static and whether or not they accomplish their goals of revenge/defeating organized crime are ultimately not super important to the story. Example, while the dinner scene was amazing and bone chilling, the movie would still work without it. It just shows us something we once again already know; Alejandro is on a personal vendetta and willing to do bad things to achieve it, and the feds are supporting him. If you cut that scene entirely, the message of the film would not be changed. However, if you ended on that scene and instead cut out the part where Kate is coerced into signing, it would fundamentally change the movie’s meaning. That’s because everything the movie is trying to do rests on her, not him. Because of that, I kind of just viewed it more as a story where she is the protagonist but just loses in the end. Anyway, if you read this far thanks, I’m interested to hear people’s thoughts 😅

Something off topic i often think about that relates to the narrator. He references good and evil in his closing statement. I think good and evil is often, all in perspective. Just like the crooked cop in the film, in my view he was just trying to get ahead. But from alejandros view or the feds, he was a cooked cop pushing drugs (bad guy). He never hurt anyone directly. I felt like the director was trying to confuse us on who is good and bad. Until the end he gives definitive answers. I know its a movie, just thought provoking.
